Skepticism That McCain’s Veep Pick Is Coming This Week

Not much to update on yesterday’s report on Pawlenty. I think I can safely clarify that the person I heard this from was hearing it from Minnesota political circles. But I still suspect that if the pick is coming soon, the first thing we would see would be the pick (or finalists) suddenly clearing their schedules and canceling previous booked events, etc. Because that hasn’t happened with Pawlenty’s speech tomorrow, I don’t think the pick – whoever it turns out to be – is coming soon.

A little while back, somebody who was in the right circles told me, “keep your eye on Carly Fiorina.” This isn’t the same as somebody who knows the pick saying, “it’s Fiorina.” And the sense from this Republican figure was that she was likely to be on the short list when it gets down to the last few names, which isn’t quite “take it to the bank, my gut says this is the pick.”
Having said that, I note this comment from McCain yesterday:

“There’s so many highly qualified people in our party,” he said, “from people who have been stalwarts in our party for a long time, or great governors, and senators, business people. It’s a very tough decision.”

Fiorina obviously isn’t one of the “stalwarts in our party,” but she would seem to be one of the figures who comes to mind when one thinks of “business people who would work for a President McCain.”
