The Politico says Newt Gingrich and Fred Thompson are getting together, with the possibility of Newt endorsing Fred.
If this is an alliance, Newt has an odd way of showing it. At his meeting with conservative journalists on Monday morning, Gingrich had a couple of comments that could be construed as jabs at Thompson: I think Newt took a veiled shot at Thompson with his comment, “We’ll have to see if Fred Thompson is as decisive a frontrunner as John McCain was… or better.” More explicit was his comment, “Fred Thompson has departed the world of television in order to enter the world of television.”
Still, with former Newt-ite, current Fred-ite Rich Galen sitting at the table, there were two members of Team Fred in attendance. Hmmm…
UPDATE: Newt’s press secretary emphasizes that Gingrich hasn’t made a decision to run, and he isn’t considering endorsing anyone at this point.
