The Campaign Spot

Gadgetry Doesn’t Make a Candidate, It Just Reveals Him (Or Her)

Over on the home page, I have an article on how new technologies – let’s call them YouTubeMySpaceFaceBookMashUp – are affecting the campaign this cycle. My sense is that most of these technologies are less revolutionary than evolutionary, upgrading existing forms of the candidates’ communication. For example, the YouTube debate just opened up the traditional town-hall-forum to more people, and eliminated the people who freeze up and stammer when it’s their turn to ask a question.

Conclusion: “Even the greatest technology in the world can’t hide what a candidate is made of; if you’re prone to outbursts, sooner or later you’ll end up screaming a list of states into a live microphone. The gadgetry doesn’t make the candidate; it just helps reveal him (or her).”
