Big Turnout in Alabama; I Credit Dale Peterson

Three states hold primaries today; turnout is heavy in one and light in the two others.

Alabama:

Hundreds of thousands of people voted Tuesday in Alabama’s primary elections, a number which surprised some election analysts. Polls opened at 7 a.m. across Alabama Tuesday morning for people voting in the Republican or Democrat primary elections.  Election analysts had predicted a third of Alabama’s registered voters would turnout for Tuesday’s primaries but, by early afternoon, some analysts suggested the number would be as high as 38 percent.

Mississippi:

Mississippi election officials say voter turnout was light for Tuesday’s congressional primaries.

New Mexico:

New Mexico Secretary of State Mary Herrera says if early numbers are any indication, the voter turnout for the state primary election could be the lowest in years. As of Monday, Bernalillo County Clerk Maggie Toulouse-Oliver said that she expects the final voter turnout numbers in the county alone to be somewhere between 20-30 percent.  Statewide, Herrera estimates the total number to be around 9 percent.
