America’s Forgotten War Against ISIS

This week President Obama will travel to Detroit, Phoenix and Tennessee to preview State of the Union themes on manufacturing, housing, and college education; Tuesday, Obama meets with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto at the White House.

The president’s last major remarks came in his end-of-year press conference; he mentioned the fight against ISIL for one sentence.

In the president’s schedule and remarks there is little or no indication that the United States is at war. Today is the 83rd day of Operation Inherent Resolve, targeting ISIS/ISIL. Yet most of the country, and certainly most of Washington, barely gives the war a moment’s thought most days.

This morning the U.S. Navy released this photo:

Royal Navy Chief Callum Gardner directs an F/A-18 Hornet onto a catapult on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), marking the first strike operations of 2015. Carl Vinson is deployed in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility supporting Operation Inherent Resolve, strike operations in Iraq and Syria as directed, maritime security operations, and theater security cooperation efforts in the region. How many sentences will the effort against ISIS get in the State of the Union January 20? A paragraph? Two paragraphs?
