Darrelle Revis Signs with the Patriots

As if the Jets–Pats rivalry wasn’t good enough, New England just added ex-Jet Darrelle Revis

On the same day he was officially released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Darrelle Revis agreed to sign with the New England Patriots on Wednesday night, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. [. . .]

Revis made his name with the New York Jets from 2007-12, during which time the team enjoyed a nasty rivalry with New England. That makes the Patriots’ pickup of the star corner that much more interesting.

Back when Revis was playing for the Jets, it would’ve been nearly impossible to imagine him heading to any other team, especially New England; it took just a couple seasons for Revis to emerge as the best cornerback, and one of the best players overall, in the NFL. His ability to lock down one side of the field, a phenomenon which soon became known as “Revis Island,” was instrumental in the Jets’ defense becoming one of the most fearsome units in the league under coach Rex Ryan.

I like the move. He’ll be paid $12 million by the Pats, but it’s only for a year. NFL.com describes the move best I think: “It’s only a one-year rental, but this is a one-year league.”
