Previewing Obama’s Big Mideast Speech

From the USA Today:

President Obama plans to propose new economic help to Tunisia and Egypt on Thursday as those nations try to forge democracies that he hopes can become models in the turbulent Middle East.

The economic proposals, including debt cancellations and loan guarantees, will be part of a comprehensive speech on Middle East policy that Obama will deliver Thursday morning.

Economic growth is a key to Middle East reform, aides said, and the president will discuss ways that countries can help create jobs while reducing corruption that is rampant throughout the region.

Among the plans: Canceling debts owed by Egypt, provided they use the money to invest in economic and government development. Both Egypt and Tunisia — the two Middle East nations where authoritarian governments have actually been overthrown — would also be eligible for new loan guarantees.

In other words, the United States must end subsidies to American oil companies so we can subsidize the oil-producing nations of Egypt and Tunisia.
