Just wanted to make sure that readers of Phi Beta Cons were aware of the controversy surrounding Virginia Tech’s use of a “diversity” factor in tenure and promotion guidelines (e.g., the promotion and tenure committee “expects all dossiers to demonstrate the candidate’s active involvement in diversity”). Mark Bauerlein’s early critique is here, and here is the Virginia Association of Scholars letter to the president of Virginia Tech. I also found particularly powerful this interview, posted yesterday, with another southern university’s official — a black woman — who’s fed up with a similar situation at her school.
