A year ago, Professors Norman Van Cott and Clarence Deitsch of Ball State University wrote a piece for the Pope Center that lamented the grade inflation they observed over decades at their institution. In today’s Pope Center piece, Professor Van Cott looks back on the ripples his findings caused in the rather placid waters of Ball State and Indiana politics. For one thing, the university formed a task force to study the problem, but although it says that its work is 40 percent complete, it hasn’t even come up with a definition of academic rigor. What could be slower and less apt to recommend any serious action than an academic task force?
