Incentives and Unintended Consequences in Title IX

Since June marks the anniversary of Title IX, I thought it was a good time to take a look at the landmark gender equity law. In a new policy paper for the Independent Women’s Forum, I focus on the incentive structure created by Title IX enforcement mechanisms in collegiate athletics. In the paper, I argue that the common decision for schools to cut men’s programs or roster spots isn’t a coincidence — it’s a direct outgrowth of the government-created incentive structure inherent in Title IX compliance measures.
