Gonzaga’s Great Leap Forward

Gonzaga University’s Steering Committee recently released a document (“Vision 2012”) to the public, proposing “key critical strategic issues” as well as “area/School/divisional strategic plans.”

One item read: “We aspire to increase the percentage of newly-hired staff; tenured, tenure-track, and fixed-term faculty from diverse ethnic, racial, and gender groups . . . by 1.5 to 2 percent per year” over the next five years.

This suggested growth is way too small, according to some members of the student senate. We should shoot for getting close to 50 percent minority faculty by 2012.
