An Excellent Guide for College Selection

In a recent interview with “Evo,” Thomas Lindsay of the Texas Policy Foundation speaks about the role of government in education.

What jumped out at me was the following comment he made: “The best that we can hope to do under the circumstances is to better inform prospective students and their peers about their choices – the investment they are about to make in education, what the likely learning outcomes are, what the likely competitiveness outcomes are, what the student loan is going to entail and what an average starting salary is projected based on the major they have chosen.”

This is it, in a nutshell, and I wish every college counselor in every high school would follow Tom’s guidance in assisting their students to make the right choice regarding post-secondary education.

No doubt there are fine points of difference between schools of similar pedigrees, and their websites will help to identify them. But the decisions facing students and their parents are also much more fundamental and I can’t think of a better way to help them understand the issues than through the local high school guidance office. Tom Lindsay’s sentence provides most of what they need to develop a meaningful checklist.
