Phi Beta Cons

Clarifying Khalid

I noted that a prominent, Saudi prince-blessed newspaper suddenly vanished because it published an article about a Saudi extremist’s role in a violent al-Qaeda front group.
Purdue Professor George Avery emails more information about the seemingly very un-Saudi-like prince in question:

The KBS you mention in Phi Beta Cons happens to be the same Khalid bin Sultan who commanded the Arab Forces as Schwarzkopf’s counterpart in Gulf War I. In his autobiography – Desert Warrior, I think – he discussed starting that newspaper as a tool to liberalize Arab society.
