The AFT’s Solution to the Assault on Academic Freedom? Change the Subject

The American Federation of Teachers has long contributed to the erosion of academic freedom – the right to teach and to learn in a campus environment free of politicization and intolerance.
At its recent leadership meeting, covered by Inside Higher Ed, it considered the matter but flubbed the chance to reverse its sorry record. Participants ignored the real infringements against academic freedom, such as corrupt hiring practices, speech codes, and pervasive political correctness.
Instead, they sought to divert attention from these problems by identifying academic freedom with job security, or the absence thereof, for adjuncts.
This latest act of evasion is part of a pattern of egregious deception by the AFT. (I recently highlighted another such example, i.e., its recent see-no-evil report on faculty bias.)
