Academic Inquisitors

That’s the title of an excellent piece in today’s Wall Street Journal by Christina Hoff Sommers. She is writing about the furious dispute over the “underrepresentation” of women in math and science departments.
The militants are calling for the enforcement of anti-discrimination laws to increase the percentage of women, but that is just more foolish groupthink. If any individual woman wants to go for a doctorate in those fields and then go through the university hiring process in order to advance either herself of the cause of women, by all means do so. If there is any problem here, which is doubtful, the solution lies not in coercion and mandates but in voluntary individual action.
