Police are investigating a “shooting incident” at a Chicago White Sox baseball game that injured two women.
Police say a 42-year-old woman was shot in the leg and a 26-year-old woman sustained a graze wound to her abdomen in the shooting at Chicago’s Guaranteed Rate Field.
The 42-year-old woman was transported to University of Chicago Medical Center and is in fair condition, while the other woman refused medical attention, police said.
“Upon receiving notification of this incident, CPD responded immediately and deployed additional resources while coordinating with White Sox security to maintain the safety of those who were in attendance or working at the game,” the police said in its statement. “At no time was it believed there was an active threat.”
Police are still investigating the incident, and say it is unclear whether the shots were fired from outside or inside the ballpark. The injured fans were seated in Section 161 in left-center field.
“While the police continue to investigate, White Sox security confirms that this incident did not involve an altercation of any kind,” the team said in a statement. “The White Sox are thinking of the victims at this time and wishing them a speedy recovery.”
There were more than 21,906 people in attendance at the game, in which the Chicago White Sox ultimately lost 12-4 against Oakland.
If the shooting took place inside the ballpark, it’s unclear how a weapon made its way into the stadium, as the field bans “weapons of any type, including pepper spray.”
“It is illegal for anyone to enter or attempt to enter the ballpark with a firearm, regardless of permit,” according to the park’s rules.
A fan said he was required to go through a metal detector to get into the stadium, according to FOX 32 Chicago.
A planned postgame concert featuring Vanilla Ice, Rob Base, and Tone Loc was canceled because of “technical issues.”
“Due to technical issues, tonight’s postgame concert has been canceled,” a message on the scoreboard read. “We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding.”
