Former president Donald Trump said Thursday his lawyers met with special counsel Jack Smith as reporting indicates an indictment in the DOJ’s January 6 probe could be imminent.

“My attorneys had a productive meeting with the DOJ this morning, explaining in detail that I did nothing wrong, was advised by many lawyers, and that an Indictment of me would only further destroy our Country,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

Despite reporting from NBC News that Trump’s attorneys are preparing for the possibility that a federal grand jury will vote on charges against the former president as soon as Thursday, Trump claimed his attorneys were not given any notice that he would be indicted.

“No indication of notice was given during the meeting — Do not trust the Fake News on anything!” he wrote.

A federal grand jury hearing evidence in the January 6 case meets on Tuesdays and Thursday. The grand jury was reportedly gathered in downtown Washington, D.C., when Trump met with the DOJ.

Trump said last week that he had received a target letter in the investigation into his efforts to overturn the 2020 election and his actions leading up to the January 6 Capitol riot. The target letter mentioned three federal statutes related to deprivation of rights, conspiracy to defraud the country, and witness tampering.

“Deranged Jack Smith, the prosecutor with Joe Biden’s DOJ, sent a letter (again, it was Sunday night!) stating that I am a TARGET of the January 6th Grand Jury investigation, and giving me a very short 4 days to report to the Grand Jury, which almost always means an Arrest and Indictment,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social last week.

Trump is already facing 37 felony counts as a result of special counsel Jack Smith’s separate investigation into the former president’s alleged mishandling of classified documents. Before that, Trump was indicted in Manhattan on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in connection with a hush-money payment to adult-film actress Stormy Daniels.

He is also facing a separate criminal investigation by a Georgia state prosecutor into his alleged efforts to influence the 2020 election results in the Peach State. Fulton County district attorney Fani Willis signaled that she plans to decide whether to bring charges in the case sometime next month.
