The United States Naval Academy is hiring a professor specializing in gender and sexuality studies amid growing geopolitical turmoil that could test America’s military readiness.

The academy is seek an English professor with a concentration on “Gender and Sexuality Studies (open period or genre)” to begin work in January, 2024, according to the Annapolis website.

“We welcome subspecialties in disability studies, film, and multiethnic or global Anglophone literature,” the job description adds.

The school did not immediately respond to request for clarification on the role’s purpose or whether it would prepare graduates to fight the nation’s wars.

Based in Annapolis, Md., the academy’s mission is to “develop Midshipmen morally, mentally and physically and to imbue them with the highest ideals of duty, honor and loyalty in order to graduate leaders who are dedicated to a career of naval service and have potential for future development in mind and character to assume the highest responsibilities of command, citizenship and government.”

The English major at the United States Military Academy, which educates Army officers and is one of the most prestigious universities in the nation, also offers courses in gender history and the politics of gender and sexuality. West Point also offers a minor in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. The United States Air Force Academy has the same minor.

Last year, the U.S. Navy partnered with an active-duty sailor and part-time drag queen for recruitment videos. In May, House Republicans demanded Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin “put an end to drag shows and any ‘drag queen influencers’ performing in our military.”

Joshua Kelley, a 2nd class petty officer who identifies as non-binary and performs as drag queen “Harpy Daniels,” was one of five ambassadors tapped for a Navy social media program launched to diversify the branch’s members and boost recruitment. The U.S.S. Ronald Reagan in Japan had Kelley perform in events staged by the Navy’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation department.

In June, a drag show was scheduled at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada in celebration of Pride Month. The event was approved by Air Force leaders and senior Defense leadership, including Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley. Defense Department officials then scrapped the event, arguing it was inappropriate use of a military base. Nellis Air Force Base has hosted two drag shows in the past and was preparing for its third annual presentation.

In 2021, Milley rejected the accusation that the armed forces are going ‘woke’ and defended West Point’s incorporation of Critical Race Theory into its curriculum.

“I want to understand white rage, and I’m white,” he commented during testimony before the House Armed Services Committee. “What is it that caused thousands of people to assault this building and try to overturn the Constitution of the United States of America.”

Representative Mike Waltz (R., Fla.) sounded the alarm on Critical Race Theory at West Point after he acquired slides from a class presentation called “Understanding Whiteness and White Rage” and a lecture slide titled “White Power at West Point.”

Waltz reached out to West Point Superintendent Lieutenant General Darryl Williams in April demanding an explanation for the teachings, which he called “divisive,” “destructive,” and “unacceptable.”
