The Georgia lawmaker who exposed himself and shouted a racial slur on television will resign despite originally promising to stay in office.
Republican Representative Jason Spencer wrote to Georgia House Speaker David Ralston to inform him of his resignation effective July 31 after the unsavory performance.
The lawmaker appeared on Sunday’s episode of Sacha Baron Cohen’s satirical Showtime series “Who Is America?” where Cohen posed as an Israeli anti-terrorist campaigner.
He was shown ridiculing Chinese people, yelling the n-word multiple times, and exposing his backside while yelling “I’ll make you a homosexual!” to fictitious terrorists.
After the incident went viral, Spencer. apologized for his behavior in a statement to the Washington Post, calling it a “ridiculously ugly episode.”
“Sacha Baron Cohen and his associates took advantage of my paralyzing fear that my family would be attacked,” he said. “I deeply regret the language I used at his request.”
The Georgia House speaker and Georgia Governor Nathan Deal both condemned Spencer’s performance and requested his resignation.

The premise of Cohen’s show involves the comedian and actor disguising himself and pranking unknowing people. Spencer, who says Cohen duped him, previously promised to sue the producers of “Who Is America” if they used the film.
Cohen has also tricked former Republican Congressman Joe Walsh, former Vice President Dick Cheney, Carly Fiorina, and Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
Spencer already lost his Republican primary bid but would have been in office through November.
