Forty-nine percent of independents think former president Donald Trump should end his presidential campaign in the wake of his felony conviction, according to a new poll.

The poll, from Morning Consult, found that 15 percent of Republicans believe Trump should drop out of the race now that he’s been convicted on 34 felony counts for falsifying business records.

Still, the poll finds President Biden and Trump neck-and-neck, with Biden leading the former president by just one point.

Meanwhile, a Reuters/Ipsos poll found that 25 percent of independent voters said they were less likely to vote for Trump after his conviction, while 18 percent said they were more likely to support him.

A majority of independent voters, 56 percent, said the conviction will not affect their vote.

Forty-five percent of Americans identify as independents, according to Gallup.

In the Reuters poll, 46 percent of voters said Trump should be sentenced to prison, while 44 percent of voters in the Morning Consult poll said the same.

Trump’s sentencing is scheduled for July 11, four days before the Republican National Convention kicks off in Milwaukee. He faces up to four years in prison, though legal experts who spoke to National Review agreed that probation is the more likely punishment.

At that point, Trump will almost certainly file an appeal and be released on bail pending the outcome of the appeal process, which could take a year or more. And nothing in the Constitution prevents a convicted felon from running for president.

The Trump campaign announced on Friday that, in the 24 hours after the conviction, it received nearly $53 million in donations.
