Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says the Iranian-American scholar Haleh Esfandiari should be able to return to her family.
However, the final decision regarding Esfandiari’s case is up to the judge in charge, President Ahmadinejad underlined in a press conference in Tehran on Tuesday.
He also added that in his opinion, Esfandiari should have been authorized to contact her family.
Haleh Esfandiari, the previous director of the Middle East program for the Washington-based Woodrow Wilson International Center, has been charged with conspiracy against the country’s national security and was arrested on May 8, 2007.
She was released on bail on August 2, after the preliminary investigations ended.
