I’ve received a couple dozen emails about the X-Men movie, this one seems best at summarizing them.

The consensus seems to be that if you adore the X-Men and care about the movies being as close as possible to the comics then you will hate Ratner for taking liberties with the original material. But if you’re not so bothered with that it’s a fun movie. Try not to get any spoilers, the movie is so much better without knowing what’s happened, but stay till the end, there’s an extra scene after the credits roll.
