WSJ Calls for Deporting — McCain?

The usual sophomoric nonsense from the Wall Street Journal, this installment entitled “Keep the Immigrants, Deport the Multiculturalists.” This is the school of thought I describe as believing that there’s nothing wrong with immigration that ending multiculturalism won’t fix. Even if this were true, it would actually be an argument for ending mass immigration, because the multiculturalists aren’t simply a handful of Chicano Studies professors and their ilk — that’s just the tip of the iceberg. We have today a multiculturalist-in-chief, who is surpassed only by his possible successor, Sen. McCain, who seems to have never encountered a multiculturalist cause he didn’t embrace. But apart from Amnesty John, the anti-assimilation problem is deeply rooted in every institution — it’s not just the Columbia faculty we’d need to deport, but every corporate human resources department; the administrators of every school, public and private; every manager in every federal, state, county, city, and town bureaucracy; every police official, every church official, every reporter and editor. In other words, multiculturalism is a deeply rooted problem in all modern societies, a consequence of the elite’s loss of self-belief. Restoring elite confidence in America is la ong, twilight struggle, and continuing mass immigration in the midst of such a struggle is a colossal strategic error.
