I’ve had a wait-and-see attitude to Perry. Given the flirtations of other potential candidates, I wasn’t prepared to believe he’d get in until the completion of his announcement speech. Well, he’s in. Now, we have to see how he runs and how he wears on people. Ramesh and I have another of our “5 questions” pieces about new candidates. The first question is, “Can he win Iowa?” The more I think about it, the more important that question is. If he doesn’t win Iowa, he’s probably going to perform poorly in New Hampshire, and then he’s weakened going into South Carolina. If he wins Iowa, his path to the nomination opens up; if the past is any guide, if we wins both Iowa and South Carolina, he’ll be the nominee.
