Unscientific Soccer Poll

We’re at an ice-skating complex in NJ for hockey practice this morning — so you have lots of sports-fan types (parents and kids), and they are undoubtedly more international sports-friendly than, say, a little-league baseball gathering since a lot of people are here for figure-skating, not hockey.

So I go into the pizzeria which doubles this time of day as a breakfast shop. It’s big because this is a hang-out for kids: there are 3 big-screen TVs. All the TVs are showing this morning’s soccer game, which I think pits one of the Koreas against Germany — I didn’t watch long enough to nail that down, though I did see a goal scored, which may be the only time that happens all day, right? Anyhow, there are 12 people in the place. One man is glued to the soccer. No one else is paying it the slightest bit of attention (the sound is turned down, so it can’t be that they’re listening intently but not watching). People are chatting, reading the newspaper, reading books, watching through the window as kids skate, etc. But there are as many people watching who’s watching (one — me) as watching soccer.
