The AKP, after its historic re-election, has decided to renominate Abdullah Gul for the presidency. The nationalist MHP has already said it will not deny the AKP a quorum in parliament this time, the basis for the obviation of the last presidential selection. What is likely going to rub many Turks the wrong way is that, again in contrast to political tradition and to the notion of a president above politics, the AKP selected its nominee in a meeting of just a handful of party leaders rather than seeking as broad a compromise/consensus candidate as possible.
