On a Truce

Laurent Fabius, the French foreign minister, has been in the Middle East, pushing for a truce between Israel and Hamas. (To read about this, go here.) I find myself in the odd position of not favoring a truce. How can that be? War is hell, and the stopping of it is good.

The problem is the nature of Hamas. They are sworn to destroy Israel, and in fact exist to destroy Israel. I favor their utter defeat. A truce would merely give them a respite, before the resumption of their drive. Their attitude is, “Win or die.” Destroy Israel or die trying. I vote die.

If the Palestinians want anything like coexistence, they will have to do without Hamas — because coexistence is anathema to Hamas.
