Top N.J. Dem Warns of Criminal Charges over Bridge Controversy

As the controversy surrounding Chris Christie’s administration’s ties in the closure of parts of the George Washington Bridge grows, New Jersey’s state-senate majority leader said criminal charges may come about as authorities learn more about the “troubling” situation.

“I am not a lawyer,” Democrat Loretta Weinberg told Talking Points Memo. “I am not a prosecutor, but from where I come from, you can’t use public facilities to politically punish people.”

The September lane closures caused traffic problems for the New Jersey city of Fort Lee, causing critics to believe the decision was politically motivated by the Christie camp because the city’s mayor did not endorse Christie in his reelection bid. Wednesday’s revelations showed Christie appointees and aides communicating about the closure, and mocking those affected by it.
