The Trump campaign shouldn’t have turned the mic over to that overmatched comedian who told the Puerto Rico and other supposed jokes that fell flat at the MSG rally, but reading the headlines you’d think he was the main event. There was, actually, a Trump speech at the end. I watched much of it, and then, after the tsunami of negative coverage, I went back to read the transcript to double-check that my impression was correct. I have to say that Trump himself was upbeat and on message, something you’ll never hear in the mainstream news coverage or commentary. There’s a mismatch between the way the media portray the Trump campaign, as an unrelieved series of terrible gaffes, and the fact that the race has been tilting (slightly) its way. The hostile filter leaves out much that is important because it doesn’t fit a narrative of unending political catastrophes.
