The Border Crisis Is Not Something That Happened to Biden

It’s notable that Biden’s border proclamation makes it sound as if the border crisis is a product of large-scale forces totally outside his control. It doesn’t, as far as I can see, make a single reference to Biden’s actions at the outset of his administration unraveling the Trump border-control measures. No, it portrays Biden as a victim of hemispheric trends, even though in his Time magazine interview, the president said he only regrets not acting faster to demolish the system set up by Trump. (In some cases, acting faster wouldn’t have been possible since Biden began this effort on proverbial Day One.) Biden created this crisis with very deliberate choices, and he implicitly acknowledges as much through the executive order, which shows that he always had the unilateral power to crack down on the border, not just pry it open.
