Subway Lament

The Sun editorializes today that New York should re-privatize the subways. As one of the hoards who had to walk and bus around Manhattan yesterday (which I usually enjoy, except for the 90 degree heat, 100 percent humidity, and the fact I was wearing a suit and wing tips and carrying a 30-pound bag), I’m all for anything that would punish incompetent management. But public transportation just isn’t a profitable business — rather it’s a utility that a large, densely populated city needs to function. Maybe there’s a better way to do it — say, privately run but subsidized — but it seems to me that if the subways were completely privatized and had to turn a profit, most of the lines would end up being shut down.
