Speaker Mike Johnson’s Weekend in New York

Rep. Mike Johnson (R., La.) pumps his fist as the end of voting nears and he appears set to prevail in his campaign to be the next Speaker during another round of voting to pick a new Speaker of the House of Representatives at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., October 25, 2023. After raising $1.4 million in Florida at his first major fundraiser as speaker of the House last month, Louisiana Republican Mike Johnson hit the fundraising trail again this weekend — this time in New York. As NR reported last week, Johnson’s fundraising efforts will be vital to protecting the House GOP’s razor-thin majority. And ahead of a presidential year, every cent counts.

The New York Post reported Sunday evening that Johnson and House GOP conference chair Elise Stefanik of New York raked in $1 million at a pair of Manhattan fundraisers over the weekend, featuring high-profile figures like Blackstone Group CEO Stephen Schwarzman and former New York representative Lee Zeldin. (Recall that Zeldin’s strong gubernatorial run against Democratic governor Kathy Hochul last year is widely credited for helping many House Republicans flip Biden districts during an otherwise lackluster midterm cycle for the GOP.) NR confirms that Johnson and Zeldin raised roughly half a million dollars at Sunday evening’s “Grow the Majority NY” fundraiser and both Republicans ended the evening with the pro-Israel nonprofit Zionist Organization of America, according to a Zeldin spokesman.
