South Carolina and The Ashley-Coopers

From a South Carolinian now living in New York:

Dear Sir,

The ancestor to all those cursed lords, the first Earl of Shaftesbury – also named Anonthy Ashley Cooper, was a major figure in the Restoration court and one of the eight Lords Proprietors of the colony of Carolina. In honor of this man, the two rivers that envelop the peninsula now known as Charleston were named after him; the Ashley to the west and the Cooper to the east.

As was no less true when they were named, the Ashley and the Cooper still converge off the Charleston Battery to form the Atlantic Ocean.
