In declaring his opposition to the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative, which would get rid of preferences based on race, ethnicity, and sex in state programs, the Mayor of Detroit declared on Sunday: “There will be affirmative action here today. There will be affirmative action here tomorrow, and there will be affirmative action in our state forever.” It infuriates the defenders of affirmative action when its critics quote Martin Luther King; we, on the other hand, are perfectly happy for them to paraphrase George Wallace.
