According to Variety, a bunch of Attorneys General are urging movie studios to add anti-smoking messages to films that depict smoking. Why stop there? I ask. They could push for anti-violence ads on action DVDs, warnings about STDs for any movie where casual sex is portrayed, warnings about seatbelt use in movies with car chases, warnings about how the value of investments can go down as well as up in dramas involving high finance and a disclaimer that the movie does not endorse the policies depicted therein in political dramas such as The American President. Movies that contain all of these could have warnings so long they’d equal or exceed the length of the original, and in order to ensure that everyone gets the message our litigious friends could demand that the DVD Menu option be disabled so that viewers would have to sit through all of them. A capital idea! How dare people choose to watch a movie without thinking through the consequences of that action…
