The Corner

This Should Go Much More Smoothly

After a meeting with House GOPers last week turned into pundit Rorschach, with both sides declaring victory, President Obama will take questions tomorrow from a (presumably) much-friendlier audience in the Senate Democratic caucus, when he addresses the group at their annual retreat.

The White House and the Senate have yet to announce whether the meeting will be televised. I hope it is. In recent weeks the president has indicated impatience with his Senate super-majority on issues ranging from a proposed deficit commission to jobs and energy bills, and Senate sources have complained in turn about a lack of White House leadership on Obama’s signature domestic policy initiatives. So it will be interesting to see if any of those tensions are borne out in the back-and-forth, or whether it will just degrade into a love-fest.
