Tonight’s debate is the culmination of one of the most extraordinary weekends in American politics in a very long time. No one can be sure what will happen, or how it will land. It’s entirely possible that Donald Trump stands 10 feet from Hillary Clinton and calls Bill a rapist. Just now Trump had a brief press availability with Bill Clinton accusers (at the end a reporter yelled out the question to Trump, do you touch women against their will?, and Paula Jones shot back, “Why don’t you ask Bill Clinton that?”) Maybe the event was meant to put the women and their stories in the media bloodstream and rattle Hillary Clinton, without Trump bringing it up during the debate. Or maybe it’s a sign that Trump will unleash all of this during the debate in a high-drama, high-stakes gamble.
