Roger Scruton has good piece in the Journal today (No link), on conservatism. It’s the first of what appears to be a series. One point he makes which I think is deeply useful for WSJ readers to hear is that the market is important not because it’s the most efficient means of distributing goods and services but because it is the best means of running a society in most cases. If there were a system that did all of the good things the market does, without the social costs, there would be a good case to make for scrapping the market. Fortunately, we’ve tried the others and they suck pond water, so there’s little chance of that happening.
