Sanford: ‘I Absolutely Failed in My Personal Life’ But Never Failed with the Taxpayer

After releasing the first ad in his congressional campaign yesterday, former South Carolina governor Mark Sanford sat down for an interview on The Today Show this morning. Sanford addressed the 2009 scandal surrounding his marital infidelity off the bat, telling co-host Savannah Guthrie that “the reality of our lives is if we live long enough, we’re going to fail at something.”

“I absolutely failed in my personal life and in my marriage,” he said, “but one place I didn’t ever fail was with the taxpayer.” Sanford cited his 20-year record as both a congressman and a governor, and called the nation’s financial problems “the ill that’s before us as a civilization.”
