There had been some speculation that Trump was just dangling the prospect of Secretary of State for Romney to humiliate his erstwhile critic. It looks like Romney is under very serious consideration, though. Romney is an accomplished and serious guy, but it’s hard to see how this relationship would work (it would be a team of complete opposites) and Romney seems a much better candidate for secretary of the treasury than state. Since Trump himself is not a foreign-policy hand, it is important to get someone at state who knows the territory. Trump tends to make personnel decisions sometimes based on appearance, and if he selects Romney because he “looks the part,” it might be the single worst rationale for picking a secretary of state ever.
