Rebranding St. George

My bad, of course, but the mere thought of a ‘theological think-tank’ overwhelms me with such profound boredom that a speech by Hillary Clinton seems like an exciting entertainment alternative, but sometimes, just sometimes, a piece of news comes along that makes me think I was wrong. From the London Times:

Forget St George, the saint of slaying dragons, the Crusades and the England football supporter. It is time for the patron saint of England to be “rebranded” as a persecuted representative of Britain’s ethnic minorities, a black dissenter who rebelled against the abuse of power. Ekklesia, the influential theological think-tank, today calls for St George, who appeared to the Crusader army at Antioch in the 11th century and was adopted as the patron saint of soldiers, to be given a makeover. Out must go the dragon, the crusades and the associations with patriotism and Empire. Instead St George’s Day should become a “day of dissent” when England celebrates its noble, alternative tradition of rebellion against the abuse of power, Ekklesia says.

Hahahaha.

From their pretentious name to their absurd opinions, “Ekklesia” offer the prospect of hours of harmless entertainment. Thanks chaps!
