Re my earlier post on “representation without taxation,” a reader — an academic but without tenure so he’s understandably cautious about attempting an exercise of free speech — notes this piece by Steven Malanga of the Manhattan Institute and in particular the following statistic:

Of the 138 million households who file tax returns, only about 16 million, or 11 percent, earn enough to pay more to the feds in taxes than they get back in services.
