Well, that was my clear impression at the time; and I think the narrative of her life bears it out, though her subscription to National Review certainly softens the picture.

My favorite Svetlana story: During the war years, when she was seeing a guy her father disapproved of, she & Dad had some screaming matches, in one of which Stalin was heard to shout: “We’re trying to fight a war here, and all you can think of is f***ing!”

As a different Russian said, every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.
