Tonight, Hillary Clinton said, “That’s why I’m in favor of much more college aid, not these outrageous predatory student loan rates that are charging people I’ve met across Pennsylvania, 20, 25, 28 percent interest rates.” Jonah and Mark H. (and I) wondered how that could possibly be true.

I asked Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson if Hillary had actually met a lot of people paying off student loans at a 28 percent interest rate. “I think that clearly some students are paying a very large amount on student loans,” he said. “I don’t know how many are paying 28 percent, but I think if you go around and talk to families who have kids in college, there are some students who are paying an awful lot of money in interest on student loans.”
