And as Michael has noted repeatedly, the intelligence community has pooh-poohed the idea even as my old office charged in the original 1998 bin Laden indictment, and later proved in the embassy bombing trial, that Iran and al Qaeda have had a mutual cooperation arrangement, and have worked together, since the early 1990s. Indeed, the 9/11 Commission darkly suggests, but does not allege, Iranian participation in the 9/11 attacks — a theory that hasn’t gotten more traction only because our corroborating intelligence is so sketchy, not because the theory is weak.
