The Corner

re: Children of Men

I reviewed the movie for NRO a few months back, and I really didn’t like it at the time.  I’ve since watched it again and have come to appreciate it somewhat more; it doesn’t stand up to the book, of course, and it isn’t half as smart as it thinks it is.  But, at least from a technical perspective, it’s a rather astounding film. The final long take through the war-battered streets of the immigrant camp is breathtaking. As long as you don’t expect it to add up to much, it’s pretty neat to watch. I also highly recommend Anthony Sacramone’s excellent write-up on the problems with the book-to-screen adaptation over at First Things.
