Rallying around the President

As Dan notes below, Senator Schatz is trying to seize a partisan political advantage for Democrats vis-à-vis Ukraine by accusing Republicans of seeking a partisan political advantage. Old hat, sophomoric stuff.

But contra the gentleman from Hawaii, it is never essential to rally around the president. Often, it is essential that we don’t. The president isn’t the country. He isn’t even the government. And, contra the gentleman from Hawaii, President Biden is not “leading the free world in response.” American leadership is nowhere evident in this mess.

Do you know when is a good time to criticize the president, Senator Schatz? When he is doing a bad job. Spare us your imbecilic pieties.
