“Quietly”

David Frum has a very thoughtful post up on Miers. But one thing really doesn’t scan for me. He writes “It would be best if this nomination were quietly and decently withdrawn. If not, it should be resisted.”

How does David think Bush could “quietly” withdraw the nomination in this climate? It’s not like he could casually slip it unnoticed into casual conversation amidst comments about clearing brush on his ranch. “Oh, by the way, I’ve decided to withdraw her nomination. Will you look at those branches!”
