Proposed Marine Corps Unisex Hat Design Getting Heat

President Obama’s plan to create a unisex look for the Marine Corps isn’t going over well with the Devil DogsSpecifically, a proposed design for new hats, which look somewhat like kepis, is being called too feminine.

The new “Dan Daly” hats — named after a Long Island Marine who won the Medal of Honor in World War I — are thinner at the top and have earned the ire of at least one anonymous senior Marine, who derided the design.

“We don’t even have enough funding to buy bullets, and the DOD is pushing to spend $8 million on covers that look like women’s hats!” he told the New York Post. “The Marines deserve better. It makes them look ridiculous.”

The current hats have been in use since 1922 and replacing them could cost more than $8 million. Officials will vote by Friday on whether to adopt the new hat or stay with the existing hat. The final decision lies with General James Amos, the commandant of the Marine Corps.
