I agree with most of what you’re saying, John, but the president should show as much patience with his supporters as he does his detractors — who call him such things as Hitler and plot his demise. This appointment, after all, isn’t just about the president’s legacy, but the nation’s future. Of course key parts of the conservative base will be upset if the president looks for a non-originalist, and I believe it will hurt the party for years to come. But I, too, believe he will do the right thing.
